Lectures on sari draping and weaving

These lectures can be given separately or as a series. They last one hour and a half (plus half an hour for questions). Each lecture is illustrated with onstage demonstrations and slides.

1. A history of Southern India through clothes

This lecture discusses the evolution of Indian clothing and its relation to religion and ethnic identity. It highlights historical trends over the past two millennia and illustrates the changing styles with slides and onstage demonstrations of draping techniques.

2. The art of weaving in India

From the heavy gold brocaded saris to the "ikat" cloth, all the main weaving techniques of India are explored in this lecture, illustrated with slides and actual saris. It also explains the sociological aspects of the weaving industry, which is very much rooted in village life.

3. The art of drape - how to drape one's origins

The women of the different ethnic groups of India used to drape their saris in different ways, indicating their social status. This lecture explains who wears what and how. It is illustrated with onstage demonstrations and slides.

4. Draping workshop

With a maximum of 10 adults or children, participants learn how to drape many styles of saris. Depending on the audience, the workshop can concentrate on traditional techniques or be more creative.
